Location: Big Island of Hawai'i, between Punalu'u and South Point

We, the Aloha Family on the Big Island, are pleased to invite one and all from around the world to our 2007 gathering. Please bring your aloha, vegetarian food, blissware, and acoustic musical instruments. Please leave behind alcohol and radios!

The Big Island Gathering is particularly auspicious this year as it falls on the Full Moon which coincides with the beginning of Spring. It is the first Full Moon, called Ka'elo, in the Hawaiian Lunar Calendar.

The exact astronomical time of Imbolc, the beginning of Spring, is Feb 3, 7:05pm HST, the precise midpoint of the Sun half-way through that slice of the sky known as Aquarius.

Furthermore, the gathering also falls on one of the last significant lunar extremes of last year's Northern Lunistice, the culmination of an 18.6-year cycle.

Many at the gathering will also aim to raise conciousness to the short-sighted planned development of an "eco-" resort at Punalu'u. This development will endanger species, not provide many jobs to locals, and will surely spoil one of Hawai'i's last pristine beaches and coastal areas. A bitter irony is that a spokesman for the development corporation is the son of the late Jaques Cousteau, who surely would have been horrified by the project.

Astronomical Events During the Gathering (in HST):

2007-Jan-25, 23:56 First Quarter Moon
2007-Jan-25 20:00 Mercury 1.485 degrees south of Neptune
2007-Jan-29 08:00 Lunar extreme, Moon 28.50 degrees north of the celestial equator.
2007-Jan-31 07:00 Moon 2.53 degrees south of Pollux.
2007-Feb-01 21:00 Moon at opposition.
2007-Feb-01 20:00 Moon becomes a morning object.
2007-Feb-01 19:45 Full Moon
2007-Feb-02 12:00 Saturn 1.118 degrees south of Moon
2007-Feb-03 03:00 Moon 1.227 degrees north of Regulus.
2007-Feb-05 11:00 Moon at descending node.
2007-Feb-07 03:00 Moon at apogee .002706972041740 AU (251,682 miles or 404,957 km)

  • Punaluu crisis

    Sun, November 12, 2006 - 8:43 PM
Your comments on the proposed restoration/redevelopment of the resort at Punaluu contain numerous factual errors. Please do not spread disinformation as it deepens the divides instead moving us towards community and sustainability. The number of jobs likely for locals is beyond the capacity of the existing labor pool. The thousands of pages in the EIS and it's appendix contain amazing and wonderful information about the existing biodiversity that currently endangered, will likely prosper under the standing proposals. A new sewage treatment system is needed, currently plant is badly in need of replacement. Cousteau is a successful architect who is no spokesperson, simply an interested party like yourself, who has spoken up about his experiences of making eco-friendly design. You don't like that managed to get through to GW to get the munument designation to the western Hawaiian Islands? Go cry with the factory fishing ships crews that have lost their livelihood! I could go on, but I think you might understand I feel you've been listening to and repeating fearful propaganda. There's been plenty of it spread around this past year.

So if you want to make a difference, I suggest you write your public comment and get it submitted pronto. Deadline for public input on the EIS is November 22nd. Aloha, Y

My personal position (of course I do not speak for anyone but myself) is not that the current state of Punaluu is all that great and needs providing forever. The beach is nice, but the private property abuts way too close for comfort, and the no trespassing signs-- lines literally drawn in the sand, are like a slap in the face. SOMETHING needs to be done, but I don't trust a for-profit megadeveloper to have all the answers. We, citizens concerned about the island our children will inherit, need to be on their ass every step of the way. History has shown that the government is simply not a powerful enough watchdog to be trusted to take care of everything.

For the record, I advocate only peaceful, non-violent, non-coercive protest.

Rainbow Gatherings, by the way, are completely non-political. Many of the gatherers will have diverse opinions about this punaluu development, and there will be respect for all opinions. Please join us next year and feel free to voice your opinions in peaceful ways.

      Aloha,
      Benjamin

'Many at the gathering will also aim to raise conciousness to the short-sighted planned development of an "eco-" resort at Punalu'u.'
[[[There is no 'ecoresort' plan yet. No plan has been concluded. How can you call those who support restoration, short-sighted?]]] This development will endanger species, [[[fear inducing and wrong-minded non-statement of fact, number 2]]] not provide many jobs to locals,[[[#3]]] and will surely spoil [[[!!!#4]]] one of Hawai'i's last pristine beaches and coastal areas [[[not really the last, it is currently in very advanced decay & long time locals agree it is far from pristine, now. It used to be better before the resort collapsed]]]. A bitter irony is that a spokesman for the development corporation is the son of the late Jaques Cousteau, who surely would have been horrified by the project. [[[Cousteau the architect is not a spokesman, and to my understanding is not affilliated in any manner with the 5 Development companies.]]] [[[Let's throw out some names/of those rolling in their graves/'cause it makes me feel better/knowin' a dead one would care]]]

[[[And talk about your irony...look at what you wrote on November 12, 2006..."The beach is nice, but the private property abuts way too close for comfort..." Well, the beach used to be larger, it's true, and perhaps we should get a dredge out into the bay to pump it back. But that's beside my point, which is the first private property you may have observed from the restrooms looking east, belongs to the very family who have been at the core of trying to help "raise conciousness" to protect the place.

And that brings my curiousity onto what do you think about this place we call Punalu'u: what is your definition of protection? Who has the right to enjoy the space, and why did we allow it to become so decrepit?

          Mr Yeldar,

I don't have any easy answers. All I know is that I have yet to see an eco-friendly resort. Maybe one is possible. Maybe. The burden of proof should be on the pro-development folks. I will slightly modify my rainbow gathering announcements in the future to make it clear that rainbow is non-political, and open to folks with both pro- and anti- development positions. I apologize for not arguing with you point for point. If you are looking for a good punalu'u debate, go check out the bigislandlove tribe.

          Aloha,
          Benjamin

That is correct, the exact location is still up for debate. Any site proposal will be considered at this point. Scouting is still needed. Also, keep tuned for the location of a holding camp.

The target for this gathering is "somewhere between punaluu and south point", but really any good site on big island would be considered. At this point, we have a fallback site (the old site "Malama Ki" where past 2 gatherings have been held) and a proposed new site (which I have not yet personally explored). The proposed new site is indeed between punaluu and south point, if I am correct it is somewhere in the vicinity of Ka'alu'alu bay.

          www.topozone.com/map.asp

So any exploration in that area would be worthwhile. Especially important to consider in that area is the proximity of private landowners and their houses. We need to make sure we will not be stepping on locals' toes-- and full power drum circles will be tolerated.

I will return to the Big Island after the holidays, and then maybe we can get some scouts together and explore, maybe do an overnight camp-out at the proposed new site. Hopefully my truck still runs. :)

          Aloha,
          Benjamin
