the hawaii regional rainbow gatherring will actually be taking place the 18th thru the 29th.it will encompass the full moon and spring equinox.contrary to what is written above by metta ben the gathering is taking place.the confusion stems form the original rainbow council that has focalized the last 5 years of gatherings.this year we opened up the council to more individuals and these people effectivaly shut down the gatherring as you have been reading from mettabens posts.well the original focalizers were sad at this ego shutdown.well be sad no ore the gatherring is back on and even a site has been selected.we have a new site that is a facebook group called "hawaii rainbow gatherring" hope to see many faces seen before and those neva seen before.we also pray metta ben and his computer savvy way rejoin with our council.cant wait to commune with the family once again

Repost of the Oahu Rainbow Family fri911 concil.

(1) Dates for the upcoming 2010 Oahu rainbow gathering have not been set exactly yet.
(2) There was some concern that March would be too rainy, and therefore depending on the site, we should open up the dates to sometime in a Spring full moon, the full moons of March, April and May.
(3) There was a strong consensus that even if a "full" gathering could not be held on the March full moon, there would be at least a family-style mini-gathering, perhaps a practice run for a more audacious hike-in style gathering, to work out the kinks, to build energy and interest.
(4) We'd also like to build synergy with the spring equinox firetribe gathering.

and Aloha to the upcoming firetribe fall equinox gathering.

Also, pls let us know more about the 2010 Hawai'i Rainbow Gathering on the Jan full moon.

This year, kind folks like yourself can help ensure that future gatherings will exist for our children to enjoy when they're grown and that gatherings will once again be safe.

2010 Hawai'i Regional Rainbow Gathering

There has been a vision put forth to hold the next Hawai'i Regional Rainbow Gathering during the full moon of March 2010 somewhere on the island of Oahu.

Dates to consider:
2010 March 15, 11:02am HST New Moon (Monday)
2010 March 20, 7:32am HST Spring Equinox (Saturday)
2010 March 29, 4:26pm HST Full Moon (Monday)
2010 April 14, 2:29am HST New Moon (Wednesday)

The exact dates of the gathering are yet to be exactly determined. If you have a vision about this gathering, please join us. For 2010, we hope to hold a more traditional rainbow gathering, with true vision councils, consensus decision making, and a broader range of people doing the scouting and focalizer work, instead of just a few individuals.

I have heard through the grapevine that some people consider the Hawa'i Regional Gathering to be somewhat of a "schwaggy" gathering. Some of the highest vibration Hawai'i rainbow folk steer clear of our local regional gathering, not even mentioning it on their travels to US National, European and world gatherings. And some of the criticisms have been legitimate. Our food donations have tended to be more schwaggy than premium. We have thus far completely lacked the vision council process that has worked for just about every other regional rainbow community on the planet. Our structure of a 13 day gathering is not very appealing to world traveler if for no other reason than the fact that it is so short. The standard world gathering is one month, new moon to new moon, with the full moon at the center. Our 2008 gathering was badly scouted, and we had to move several times, and it's A-camp ended up being way too close for comfort. The whole 2008 gathering was a public relations disaster, and this gathering put a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths.

Hopefully our hard work in 2009, recovering a trashed beach, burnt off some of our bad karma, but I think we all can see we still have a long way to go before we can be an attractive gathering to the highest vibration people on the planet, and not at all an attractive gathering to the kind of people who are attracted to A-camp, and its culture of addiction. Part of this may be the motivation to shake it up a little and move to Oahu next year. Even if the "culture of addiction" type people can afford a ticket to Oahu, they may not simply because our gathering is projecting a spiritual vibration.

Since this is an Oahu Gathering, I propose we use the OahuRainbow online community, groups.yahoo.com/group/OahuRainbow to help focalize this gathering. So, come find us over there, and sing your heartsong.

the gathering is over but the bliss lives on...

Our Oahu contingent was only at the gathering for a few days, but we experienced enough to feel that post-gathering gooey, melty bliss. Really, this was a refreshingly drama free gathering, one we could feel good about-- if nothing else, we accomplished a major beach restoration-- having picked up and hauled vast truckloads of trash off the beach. Our oahu contingent did miss the final "naked beach clean up and microtrash party", but there's always next year, I suppose.

Anyway, I've been getting questions about WHY there was so much trash on the beach. Clearly, this wasn't just drunken partier trash, like we often must deal with. This was plastic trash from all over the pacific. I would estimate maybe 10-20% of the mass of the sand was actually just plastic bits of various sizes. The nature of the tides and waves was such that the sand and plastic mixture was washed inland to a surprising degree. Good thing no storms hit us during the gathering.

I have posted links before about the so called "Northern Pacific Gyre". In the pre-plastic days, the center of these gyres were teeming with life and birds, islands of naturally biodegrading mass. Nowadays the gyres are choked with islands of plastic trash, some literally 10 miles in diameter! Normally these trash islands stay put in the center of the oceans, but if the wind takes them off course, there is a very real threat that they can collide with islands such as our own. In this context, we can see that plastic trash washing up on beaches is a global problem. In most third world countries, they don't bother hauling and burying the plastic trash. They just rake it into a big pile at the end of the beach and burn it.

I have mixed opinions on the eco balance of using petrogas and petroplastic bags to haul plastic trash just so it can fill up some ancient hawaiian valley somewhere. In a way, I'd rather see it burned-- obviously some time and some place far away where no one will breathe it directly. But that was not the way of our gathering. We painstaking hauled up every little bit of trash we could to the nearest transfer station-- a good hour drive away if you drive as if you care about your vehicle.

We did good. Even the DLNR folks who checked up on us could see that, and they left us alone. As I said, it was virtually a drama free gathering, and it's a great relief after last year's vicious and immature nimbyism to have found a place where no one seemed to mind us doing our thing-- indeed, for those who love the Ka'u 'aina, our beach cleanup efforts were appreciated and even the wary locals trew us shakas as they saw our truckloads full of trash meandering out of the gathering site.

A very successful gathering by any measure. Mahalo, y'all.

Plastic sheeting to stay dry with

I have a very large heavy duty sheet of plastic to donate to the gathering. It is 20’ wide and something like 40’ long, 6 mils thick. Part of it has never been used, still rolled up. Probably best suited as a rain canopy, in smaller pieces. Can anyone come pick it up in Kalapana? I will probably not make it to the gathering but would be open to getting a ride there if anyone has room in a vehicle that can make it out the road. Call me at 808 345 2288. Aloha!

The Site is a beautiful beach front site that needs our love and care-- years of beach debrie is all over this magical Paradise. We will continue our duty on earth as one human race to be its care taker. Please bring contractor garbage bags and work gloves, to help restore the natural pristine beauty of our sacred earth.

MA LAMA ANIA KOKUA!! ANUI NUI OHANA

A high Clarence van or truck or 4x4 with a confident and knowable driver is needed for this 1 hour + , about 6 mile adventure. From HILO 11 Hwy past Naalehu watch mile markers make a LEFT on Ka'alualu Rd. after mile marker 65. pass subdivision till you get to a dart Rd. go stright down to Ka' alualu Bay (one hour +) go around to point and up the coast line Rd. Through bulldozed Lava Field. Too Kamio Point you will see signs to PARK... Please park off the road..And NOT on BEACH!!

metta's directions: I haven't made this drive in a couple of years, but the route I recommend is this: hitch or take the Hele-On bus to the start of South Point Rd. Take south point rd toward south point, but turn left just after the farmhouse (it used to be painted blue), if you go too far south past the wind turbines, you've gone too far. On this route, there are three gates. Please close these after you pass. Drive slow and carefully, and avoid the deep ruts. 2 years ago, the condition of this route was far better than the condition of the route that goes south from mark twain subdivision. This route leads to Ka'alu'alu bay, from there drive north east along the coast beyond the lava field. Hopefully welcome home signs will be posted soon. Good luck!

This gathering is an opportunity

The directions will be posted on this site soon, but while I have your attention, allow me get up on my soapbox again. The rainbow family, as most of you reading this know, is not an organization with members, but a very loose affiliation of individuals who choose to co-create a gathering. As such, we are obviously dependent on each other than we are in "Bablyon" as some choose to call it. We take it on faith that there is a good site chosen, that shitters will be dug, that relationships with locals will be congenial, that firewood will be cut, that water will be hauled, that green energy will be donated, that meals will get cooked and especially that children will get to eat their fill. We take it on faith that the beach will get cleaned up, that trash will get hauled out. We cannot possibly do everything ourselves. But we can at least plug in where we are inspired, and where we are able. If you have any kind of truck or vehicle you are willing to be enlisted for a trip or two to bring water in and trash out to the transfer station, please, we need you. If you have gas money for drivers willing to use their vehicles in service of the gathering, this is a great way to help. If you are young and full of energy, we need you to help set up and take down the infrastructure. No matter who you are, there is definitely some way to contribute. Even if you are a psychic vampire and you plan on being nothing but a bliss ninny-- well, at least admit this to yourself and come anyway. Rainbow gatherings have a way of inspiring even the most lazy, obstinate bliss ninnies to eventually become some of the biggest contributors, if not this gathering, at future ones.

Finally, let me say, keep A-camp far, far away. Please. If you want to drink that is your own business, but the core area of the gathering, main circle, kitchen circle, and kid village should be drunkenness free. I am really tired of cleaning up empties left carelessly around main circle, tired of throwing blankets over passed out drunks, tired of explaining to my young impressionable daughters what drunkenness is as they stumble on our blanket full of musical instruments, tired of hauling out cases and cases worth of empties. Sheesh. I drink alcohol in moderation myself, but not at a rainbow gathering. It's really about respect.

Alternate Site

Change is in the air this gathering.

There is an alternate site in Ka'u being scouted... it is a part of the coast that needs a lot of love and cleanup-- it is very remote, and we'll have space and freedom. Better to find an alternate site before rather than after the beginning of the gathering.

There has also been a shift, some focalizers are stepping back, others are stepping forward. Mahalo, ya'll. Folks are visiting from the mainland and the hawaiian islands. The beach will get cleaned up. The penumbral eclipse draweth nigh. The gathering will continue.

“Remember to show respect, hospitality, kindness, compassion, and above ALL Un-conditional Love for ALL. There are some who, by doing so, have entertained Light-workers and/or Angels as most folks call them without knowing it.”

Light-workers and/or Angels as most folks call them exist. They are all shapes, and sizes, and colors and are to be found in our heart of hearts as well as virtually every known monotheistic religion. And, they are found in great numbers. Students of the Cabala, an ancient sect of Judaism, ascertained in the 14th century that as many as 11,000 Light-workers and/or Angels as most folks call them are designated to each and every individual. With odds like that in our favor, one might expect to go through this life unscathed.

But, hold on…

Light-workers and/or Angels as most folks call them are actually low on the totem pole of everyone list even as a celestial champion. Some even called “Wing Nuts” what little do “We” know!

We have all heard stories of Light-workers and/or Angels as most folks call them encounters, particularly in the case of near-death experiences. History offers evidence
of these encounters, beyond the early prophetic visitation to Abraham, upon which the Judeo-Christian faith was founded. George Washington is reported to have confessed to many his belief that an Light-workers and/or Angels as most folks call them gave him strength to endure the harsh winter at Valley Forge. Abraham Lincoln believed he was
visited by Light-workers and/or Angels as most folks call them to guide him while he served in the White House. George Handel claimed to have been effected by an Light-workers and/or Angels as most folks call them encounter while composing The Messiah. Upon completion of the Hallelujah Chorus, the composer turned a tear-stained face to his servant and said, “I did think I did see all heaven open before me!”

Where does one look for an Light-workers and/or Angels as most folks call them these days? In our rainbow family, our rainbow friends, our rainbow selves? Yes. Author Pat Rodegast claims to write while channeling under the Light-workers and/or Angels as most folks call them Emmanuel. In her inspirational book, “Emmanuel’s Book III: What’s an Light-workers and/or Angels as most folks call them Doing Here?,” Rodegast suggests that we begin to truly experience ourselves when we accept that we are all Light-workers and/or Angels as most folks call them in origin. Most importantly, we should respect and recognize that our humanness, in its limited state, is only temporary, that other realms spirituality awaits us. We should forgive ALL our shortcomings and understand that they are based on fear of loving our rainbow selves and of being judged by others.
The capacity to experience unconditional love is achieved when the spirit within returns to its source; physical death is a beginning, not an end. “We” cannot love completely while we are walking in human form because the very nature of humanness is based on separation…”

How can we embrace the Light-workers and/or Angels as most folks call them within us and reach out to our Light-workers and/or Angels as most folks call them? All we have to do is open the door locked by years of fear and faulty thinking. Meditate; be open to entertaining and sharing new ideas. Become familiar with the writings of ALL
Religions and ignore any distortion man has lent while writing them.
We will discover that they share a common thread and truthfulness.
Stop judging self & others, for things are not what they appear to be.

More importantly, we must not judge ourselves & others too harshly and fear consequence and retribution for the mistakes that we’ve made. Be caring, kind, compassionate, and love thy brothers & sisters of the world as we love ourselves.
These are words to live by.
Even in a quote from the Bible note - { as well as many other religious books and belief’s. }
“For he has charged his angels to guard you wherever you go,
to lift you on their hands for fear you should strike your foot
against a stone.” -- Psalms 91:11-12

So folks be very, very careful when traveling & meeting new folks in the highways and byways of the world for you never know whom you may meet or the magic they may behold?

Aloha beautiful friends and family,

This gathering is bigger than any one of us now, as it should me, it has a momentum and life of its own. I personally know four of the scouts who have scouted the site. This site is exquisite, with natural oceanic beauty that will absolutely astound you. It is quintessentially Kona. And what comes with the territory are some very powerful hosts of the region. We must respect all our beautiful kona neighbors and their mana, because truly the quality of our gathering will be directly impacted by the quality of relationships we form with the neighbors.

Last year, my biggest disappointment with the gathering was how we handled the our relationships with the regional stakeholders. Even those who seem to be our enemies deserve love and respect! Even those who will try to shut down the gathering are our spiritual allies, and we should treat them as such. Gandhi won his revolution by getting the "enemy"-- his captors, those who cruelly tormented him, to eventually come around and see things his way. If there are any inebriated "locals" who will do us physical harm, naturally self- and family- protection is called for. But, that is not the nature of our opponents, who play much more strategically.

Our opponents last year utilized media in a way that we have not yet been able to achieve. The internet deception campaign worked brilliantly-- private tribe messages were sent out in a way that made it unclear how to foster a discussion and a unified reaction. Had the anti-gatherer made a public post on this forum, we could have possibly talked about her concerns and worked it out. Instead, internet sources of information were plunged into the depths of disinformation. For those paying attention: the gathering is ON no matter what, updates will be found on this site, and for pete's sake, ignore all rumors of cancellation, even from the internet!

A special word about the handbill that was passed around. I understand there were different versions, and different editors with different intentions. But the result was the same: a lot of COMPLETELY unnecessary fear. I understand the motivation was to limit the number of gatherers, but the means did not justify the ends. It only perpetuated stereotypes and misunderstandings, creating an "us" vs a hostile "them" that, in reality, didn't even exist, but was a convenient fiction for the anti-gathering neighbors to try to limit our numbers. Ignore the letters, you can get accurate information, right here on this website, throughout the duration of the gathering.

We will again have neighbors this gathering. Please love them, and don't even think about trespassing on their land. But remember, kapu signs refer to their private property only, not the public way of access that leads to the site. Be ever so respectful of neighbors boundaries, and please, please, please do not envy, or treat them any way differently, just because they own beautiful mansions walking distance from the ocean, and they may seem to act aloof or even hostile.

If we do hold respectful conversations, try to calm their concerns, speak gently and soothingly about how hygiene is is our top concern, about how we "microtrash" the site after we are finished, and how we help the landowner out with a lot of free labor to improve the local ecology. Also, if you are up for it, volunteer your own services for the greater good of the neighborhood. On such a small "big" island, it is far better for the rainbow family to have rich allies than rich enemies. We trust and respect the hawaiian elders and we wish to state from the outset that love of the 'aina is EXACTLY what has drawn us to their beautiful land. We do not come to take over, but merely enjoy this sacred land for a mere 13 days. Tell them to please talk to us. We can work on reasonable compromises.

In this way, we will be able to weather the ensuing storm of misunderstandings-- anonymous letter purporting to be from the hawaiian government and the like. Any representative of the hawaiian government will have the decency to come talk to us in person, not just one or two people, but a circle of our community. They are far too wise to write anonymous deceptive messages on the internet or violence-threatening handbills. If you do see any interaction with a rainbow gatherer and a neighbor, please bring a gentle circle of folks who can speak respectfully forward. Such as, especially, women.

Silent Meditation and Kids parade on 2009, Feb 8th

One intention was put forth to have a silent morning meditation followed by a kids parade on Sunday the 8th, similar in spirit to the tradition of the U.S. National.

This will be almost a full penumbral eclipse.

Site for 2009 Feb 1-13 Hawai'i Gathering has been selected!

Aloha, just got word from the focalizers on Big I.

The site for the 2009 feb gathering has been selected. It sounds
_awesome_.

The land owner apparently is very fond of rainbow gatherings and even
has his own rainbow website.

There is open space with kiawe trees and grass for camping and
kitchens. Site has water.

The site is a quick walk away from beautiful ocean access with
tidepools, but the ocean swimming is a bit rough and for adults only.
However, about a 30 minute walk away is a beautiful white sand beach!!!

The site is a twenty-five minute walk from a small parking area, and
lots of other parking is available a bit farther. Please, for the
sake of all of us with little kids or who like a peaceful environment,
out of respect for the core principles rainbow was founded on, and
also out of respect for those who have made this sacred 'aina
available, I ask that there be no A-Camp nor even drunkenness in the
actual core area of the gathering (main circle, main kitchen and
kiddie village). My daughters get very confused when they see drunk
people, and I prefer they have other role models, so come out and join
us when you're sober. Thanks.

So, if you are on the fence as to whether or not to come, I would say
call one of the Big I focalizers directly, Reverend Rainbow Tribes, at
808-965-8422, to get the low-down. He is very positive that the site
will work out. Scouted multiple times, the site is pristine, unique
and remarkably undeveloped for the kona side, as you will find out
when you get there. This is a once in a life-time opportunity: the
site will likely never be available for a rainbow gathering again.

Closest airport is Kona. Holding camp is wherever you are. After
recent incidents at MacKenzie, I can no longer recommend that site en
masse, but of course everyone is free to make their own decisions.

Stick out your thumb, meet people, have adventures and raise
awareness, consciousness and green energy for the magic hat.

Feast Day of St. Cornelius, first uncircumcised Christian

Festival of Februalia, honoring the old Roman goddess Februa, mother of Mars, later merged with Juno to become Juno Februa, so called because expiatory offerings called februa are made to her now, in the time of purification. This festival thus embodies the transition from the latent vitality of late winter to the awakening of spring, symbolized in many cultures by weather rituals -- such as Groundhog Day -- in which sun or rain, light or shadow, indicate whether winter will continue to rule, or yield soon to spring.

The Yoruba and Santeria peoples of Africa and the Americas honor Oya, the Orisha of death and rebirth, one of many manifestations of the one God Olodumare, bringer of life and death.

Celebration of Yemaja. Yemaja is an orisha, originally of the Yoruba religion, who has become prominent in many Afro-American religion. Africans from what is now called Yorubaland brought Yemaya and a host of other deities/energy forces in nature with them when they were brought to the shores of the Americas as captives. She is the ocean, the essence of motherhood, and a protector of children.

First day of the Uinal of Death (Mayan Calendar), the sixth of the 20-day Uinals in the current cycle of the Tzolkin, or 260-day calendar (10 Imix, Tzolkin 101). This Uinal is ruled by Mictantecuhtli, the Lord of darkness from which new life must proliferate in the next uinal. The Owl is the symbolic bird.

Ratha Saptami. Lord Vishnu in his form as Surya is usually worshiped on this day. Usually, Rathasapthami begins in households with a purification bath by holding a few bilva leaves on one's head while bathing and chanting a verse which is supposed to invoke the benevolence of the Lord in all that one takes up the rest of the year. It also involves doing a puja with the ritual 'Naivedyam', flowers and fruits.

This day is also known as Surya Jayanthi because it celebrates the power of the Sun God who is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

In important Vaishnavite temples like Tirumala and Srirangam, Rathasapthami figures as one of the important festivals of the year. A one day Brahmotsavam is held and the Utsava Murthy is carried out in a variety of vahanams around the main temple precints during the day.

Rathasapthami also marks the gradual increase in temperature across South India and anticipates the arrival of spring which is later heralded by the festival of Ugadi in the month of 'Chaitra'.

In the Vaishnavite tradition, days in the year marking 'Vaikunta Ekadasi', 'Rathasapthami', 'Ugadi', 'Vijayadashami', are held in high regard and observed accordingly.

Good actions done on this day give manifold results.

Feast of St. Blaise (Roman Catholic Calendar) whose efficacy in the prevention of throat diseases inspired rituals like those of the preceding day, Candlemas. Crossed, unlighted candles, symbolizing purification of speech, are held at the throat of those receiving the blessing.
Setsubun, traditional last day of winter. Rituals are performed to chase away the evil spirits of winter to make way for the rejuvenating forces of spring. Although many of the rituals have now died out, one that prevails is the scattering of roasted beans around the home, temples and shrines whilst shouting "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" ("Devils out, happiness in"). In the comic ritual plays of the season, children in the crowds of shrinegoers throw the dried beans at devil dancers carrying grotesque weapons. In the annual Setsubun dances at Heian Shrine in Kyoto -- where this shot of the author wielding a big tsubo, or iron club, was taken -- the chief oni sings the ancient Tsuina, one of Japan's oldest surviving ritual melodies. It, and the Setsubun rite itself, comes from an older Chinese practice called Ta Nuo, the cleansing of the field to prepare it for the spring thaw and planting time. When the ritual is over, participants must seek out and eat one bean for each year since their birth.

Pradosha Puja. The Pradosha worship is to be done in the evening twilight on the thirteenth day of each lunar fortnight. It is the worship of Lord Siva for victory and success in all undertakings, and the fulfilment of all your heart's cherished desires. When you desire to obtain a favour from a superior person, don't you naturally approach him at a moment when he is likely to be in a very pleasant frame of mind? You will perhaps see him after he has had a good dinner and is happily chatting with a friend in a hearty, expansive mood. Even so, the Hindu, especially the Hindu who is engaged in the motivated type of worship, usually selects the most pleasant aspect of God for his worship. He performs it at a time which the ancient Rishis experienced as being the most helpful and efficacious in propitiating the Deity. The Pradosha worship is based on such mystic psychology.

Pradosha is the worship of Lord Siva and Parvati when they both are in an extremely propitious mood. Repeatedly worsted in war by the demons, the gods approached Lord Siva to bless them with a leader for their celestial hosts. They came to the Lord at twilight on the thirteenth day of the lunar fortnight and found Him in the blissful company of His consort, Parvati. Hymned and glorified by them, Siva immediately granted their prayerful request. Hence, the extreme auspiciousness of the period.

This day is the Baha'i feast honoring the Deity as Mulk, Sacred Dominion.

For some Buddhists, this day just before the Full Moon in Leo is an important holy day. For Mahayana Buddhists it is Paranirvana Day, commemorating the passing away of the Awakened One's physical body, and his entry into Nirvana. Pure Land Buddhists assign this day the same meaning, observing it as Nirvana Day.

4:38am HT, Full Moon in Leo opposite Sun in Aquarius. The partners in this combination are not equally balanced now. The Sun continues to be "in detriment" in Aquarius, hia solar energies of control weakened, with the result that inner conflicts -- between people, within the same person -- are likely to manifest now. Every Full Moon is a potential moment for culmination and completion. But this one also has strong energies of beginning, as on this day Chiron and Neptune -- who now form a triple conjunction with the Aquarius Sun -- have moved for the first time into the true conjunction (within 3° of each other) that they will maintain for most of the next three years. One of the year's great Navajo Sing Festivals, beginning at the Full Moon in February, this one held to purify the fields and the people before the next planting season. In prayers, song and dance, and healing ceremonies, the Navajo honor Naste Estsan, the Spider Woman who spun the world and supported the warrior twins Tobadzistsini and Naymezyani in their struggle against the forces of evil. In her dual roles as Spider Woman and the shape shifter Estsanatlehi, the "Changing Woman" Creator Goddess, Naste Estsan carries and endlessly becomes the unlimited transforming power of nature.

In the Celtic/Druidic and Wiccan calendars, this Full Moon is called Storm Moon. Also Quickening Moon and Wild Moon, in the “Great Winter” season close to Imbolc, 1/31 - 2/2. It is customary during this moon to wash clothes in clove and angelica, to purify them for the Spring.

In the Jewish Calendar, this Full Moon is Tu B'Shevat, important in ancient times as a marker day for reckoning the ripening cycles of grains and fruits. This "new year for trees" is the counterpart of arbor day festivals everywhere, when trees are planted in midwinter to symbolize the growth of new life toward the promise of spring. "Our Sages," Rabbi Eliyahu Kitov writes, "have designated the 15th of Shevat as the boundary, for trees, between one year and another."

Feast day of Apollo in his aspect as Helios, god of the Sun, honored now a week after the mid-winter festival.

One of the great festival cycles (3 days) of Ausar (Osiris) in the ancient Khemitian calendar, celebrated especially at the main center of Ausar worship in Abydos (2/11) and at Busiris, the ancient holy city of the Nile delta. The principal ceremony performed on the last of these three days was a dawn ritual of opening the doors of the horizon, and thereby reaffirming the precision of the divine order operating between Sun and Earth. (Month of Pamenot, days 28 - 30).

The Pharaonic melody for this feast, as preserved in music of the Coptic church, has been found by Dr. Maged Samuel in Cairo.

Rahu-Jupiter conjunction

In the Greco-Roman calendar, 2/12 is the feast of the virgin huntress Artemis, or Diana, whose purity symbolizes the ascendancy of spirit over matter. Artemis is the protector of women and children against sexual intimidation and all violence.

The Ides of February, beginning of the eight-day Roman festival of the Parentalia, the year's chief festival in honor of the dead.

In the Roman calendar, this is one of the year's great feasts, the Lupercalia (3 days), an agricultural festival sacred to Faunus, the beneficent aspect of the god Pan in his role as giver of abundance, protector of flocks and fields. This is a day on which animal communication is especially favored, and animals are said to assist humans in other ways as well. The she-wolf who suckled Romulus and Remus is honored on this day. Above all, this festival is a celebration of love, both spiritual and erotic, in all its streams.

Fire circle communities sing this chant to Pan: "I am the dance of the forest glade in spring. / I am the joy of life, the soul of every thing. / I am the flame that leaps upon the hill. / I am the word. I am the will."

Saint Valentine's Day.

In Christian calendars, and by now in the calendars of many other cultures, Valentine's Day, the famous feast of the lovers. According to one legend from Greece -- which has been celebrating Eros, erotic love, on this day since very ancient times -- this is the day on which young doves mate during the transition from winter to spring. As doves mate for life and live in a happy fidelity that other beings rarely approach, 2/14 has embodied ever since the loyalty of true love. The symbol that has stuck for this day is the heart pierced by an arrow, fired by -- who else? -- Eros (Cupid), who has always ruled this day.

Before Feb. 14 became fixed in the solar calendar as the feast of lovers, the Athenians celebrated at this time the festival of Zeus and Hera, whose marriage bond -- despite the supreme god's constant infidelities -- somehow symbolized the ideal marriage to which earthly couples could aspire. In the Greek lunar calendar, mid-January to mid-February was the month of Gamelion, so called because it was a major mating season, engendering new babies to be born in November, when winter's approach would keep armies and other disruptions at home, thus increasing the mothers' chances of bringing new children safely to birth. Feb. 14 was Gamelion's climactic fertility rite, performed as the beginning of the mid-winter thaw heralds the coming of spring.

Similar practices survive in many European cultures. Slovenian people begin the year's work in their fields and vineyards, on the day when plants and flowers are said to start growing again, and birds are said to marry. Finns celebrate Ystavanpaiva, the feast of friendship. And in old Norfolk, long before England became the UK, a character named Jack Valentine was believed to come knocking on the back door of houses, delivering sweets and gifts to children.

Fascinatingly, the Christian association of this day involves no fewer than four Valentines: three priests named Valentinus (of Rome, Terni and Africa), all of whom were said to have been martyred on Feb. 14 in or around the year 270; and Valentinius of Alexandria, the much-admired bishop and Gnostic teacher who was reportedly among the leading candidates to be elected pope in 143. What may have ruined his chance to be the bishop of Rome was that unlike mainstream prelates whose views of women and sex ranged from ascetic to hostile, Valentinius taught that the marriage bed was the earthly sanctuary of couples who celebrated the hierogamos (see Zeus and Hera above), the sacred marriage rite between the human soul and the Divine Beloved.

Mercury re-enters Aquarius (see 1/1) on this day. Even though Mercury is said to be "exalted" here, a Mercury-in-Aquarius period is always a time of quirky and karmically buzzed communications. Essential messages must be crafted and delivered, and communication projects large and small must get moved effectively along before Mercury enters Pisces, where he is "in detriment. " Mercury can have a brilliant time of it in Aquarius, though he may get distracted, even seduced, by the Aquarian dazzle and glamor. Detail work that requires precision had best get done before Mercury enters Aquarius, and is still in Capricorn.

In the ancient Khemitian calendar, the month of Parmuti begins on this day. The netert associated with this month is Renenutet, the serpent-headed protector of children and lady of fertility and good fortune.

Japanese Zen Buddhists celebrate this day as Nehan -- literally the sleeping holy day -- honoring the Buddha's attainment of parinirvana.
Nirvana Day. Some Buddhists mark the anniversary of Buddha's death on this day.
In the Norse calendar, this day is sacred to a noted animal communicator: Siegfried, greatest of all warrior heroes, who understood the songs of forest birds after slaying the dragon Fafner and inadvertently tasting its blood.

For the people of Tanna Island in Vanuatu, this is John Frum Day, named for the semi-mythic figure whom the islanders invoked as far back as the 1930's in prayers for liberation from their colonial oppressors. During World War II, when the U. S. air force used Tanna as a supply base for the Pacific campaign, John Frum became a composite hero resembling the American fliers whose largesse to the local people in the 1940's made them the deities of the famous cargo cults that erected wooden control towers and airplanes in an effort to bring back the airmen and their bounty. John Frum Day features a ceremony of flowers and flag raising, face painting, singing and dancing, a military parade of men dressed in camouflage and carrying bamboo rifles, and a feast at which, presumably, people pray for Spam.

2009 feb gathering scout report

Aloha,

I've just gotten an update from the Big Island about preparations for the gathering. The big news is that discussions are underway with a private land owner sympathetic to our cause. This particular site is near Kona, and if everything works out this could be the completion of our four year quest to hold a gathering near each of the four corners of the Hawai'i Island diamond. Indeed, everyone has always known the hardest of the four corners to find an excellent gathering site is and will be Kona, so this is something we can all hope for. However, as always, any good site will be considered, please make your scouting efforts known to us.

Holding camp starts whenever you arrive in Hawai'i. A pre- and post-gathering holding camp will probably be located at our old successful site in the Malama Ki forest reserve, next to MacKenzie State Park, a beautiful ocean front site with lots of cocos. The actual site will hopefully be located somewhere Kona-side. Scouts are actively looking for sites, and would love to make a connection with a land owner generously willing to host us-- in return for getting lots of love and attention back to the land with our regional tribe that has a proven track record for not just cleaning up after ourselves, but restoring land to its natural pristine condition. One misnomer is that our gatherings are mainland-style huge: far from it, our gatherings hover somewhere from 60-120 people typically-- a perfect size for an intimate regional gathering (of folks from all over the world).

Reckless gov't shooting at Kiddie Village

The eyewitness accounts and youtube vids paint a pretty clear picture about the July 3rd incident at Kiddie Village at the U.S. National Gathing at Wyoming.

It takes two sides to have a war, for sure, and I try not to be overly biased about these sort of things, but there is difficultly in rationally assessing the facts without coming to the conclusion that the paramilitary incident management team succeeded in provoking an incident worthy of all the riot gear they brought along. Mission accomplished so to speak. Trying to see things from the perspective of the authoritarians produces way too much cognitive dissonance. First we have the official version of the story:

Rock Springs, Wyoming (July 4, 2008) — Forest Service officers were patrolling the main meadow area of the National Rainbow Family Gathering yesterday evening. The officers made contact with a subject that would not cooperate and fled. The subject was apprehended; once detained other Rainbow participants began to interfere with the situation.

Officers began to leave the Gathering site with the subject and were circled by more Rainbow participants that began to physically interfere. Another participant was detained for physical interference.

Ten officers were escorting the detained subjects when about 400 Rainbows surrounded the squad trying to leave. More officers were requested to assist in the main meadow area. The mob began to advance, throwing sticks and rocks at the officers. Crowd control tactics were used to keep moving through the group of Rainbows.

"This lawless behavior is unacceptable and we will not tolerate it," Forest Service Director of Law Enforcement, John Twiss, said. "The safety of our employees, public and Rainbow participants is our number one priority and we will continue to protect everyone on the National Forest."

CHEYENNE, Wyo. - A U.S. Forest Service official says the agency must consider banning the Rainbow Family from its land after a confrontation led to the arrest of at least eight people in Wyoming.

John Twiss, director of Forest Service Law Enforcement and Investigations in Washington, D.C., said Monday that he was among the officers who responded last week when Rainbow Family members threw sticks and rocks at federal officers.

Typical comment:

What Twiss (since he was there) fails to mention is that the FS LEOs spent all day on the 3rd basically trying to get into peoples' faces and piss them off. They walked into peoples' camps and were confrontational and arrogant, and pushed the limits of proper search methods. You had to be very well informed about your rights, and maybe even have had some coaching, in order to not have your rights be violated by improper searches, seizures and arrests. Along about 3PM, three of the LEOs rode through the trade circle--not actually physically contacting people, but scattering them like chickens-- on the biggest ATVs that I have ever seen-- not sitting on them, but standing up on them with stiff arms clad in black leather gloves, glowering down at people through black full-face, black-visored helmets. I just could not believe what I was seeing, and my confusion remains as to what they thought they were accomplishing, or if they realized what else they were accomplishing, and if they had thought about whether their intended aim was being outweighed by the "collateral damage" they were causing. Or whether, as some will hold, and I have to take a look at, they were intentionally causing one thing (hostility) in order to get the reaction they were looking for later. The fact that Twiss is from DC means that he is likely a mover and shaker for the FS LEO program at the national level-- they have designated a national team to take care of this "problem", and the continued existence of this team (and increasing budget, in order to allow for the purchase of such kewl "riot control" toys)depends on a justification that its services (and price tag) are necessary to "protect the public."

My comment:

It is totally old news about how successful government tactics were in breaking up and destroying countercultural movements. There is nothing conspiritorial about it. It is proven historical fact that Nixonian style tactics have worked successfully in the past-- all it takes is a few assholes dressed like hippies to make the whole movement look violent, divided, and stupid-- at least to the mainstream media. Nowadays with youtube and rapid information sharing on the internet, things get a little bit more complex, and reality is obviously more complex then a mainstream news summary could ever possibly be. Good thing too.

That being said, I have to congratulate the government on its successful tactics: going to a U.S. National Rainbow gathering war zone with my children does not sound very fun-- or safe. The irony is that by destroying the sanctuary of kiddie village, a whole segment (prudent parents) who have been a wholesome backbone and who have helped keep gatherings family/spiritually oriented, will likely choose to stay home and watch the next years' U.S National Rainbow Party/Riot on youtube.

Support your local and regional gatherings folks! Enjoy the rare merger of peace, nature, and the magic of family while you can! Because after they finish with harassing the u.s. national gatherings to death, you can be sure they will come after us. Like a rare mountain flower on the verge of extinction, the jackbooted thugs in government employment will inevitably stomp us into oblivion, another historical footnote to be forgotten by the next generation of the oppressed. And yet-- how sweet the mountain air!

community to come together RIGHT NOW to make Mayor Harry Kim change
his mind and grant us a burn exemtion. They are telling us that we can
NOT burn the phoenix based on an emergency proclamation banning all

May 2008: China World Gathering vs Turkey Peace in the Middle East Gathering

By some misfortunate timing (such is life in a leaderless non-organization such as rainbow), two important asian gatherings are happening simultaneously in May 2008: the World Gathering in China, and the Peace in the Middle East Gathering in Turkey. Personally, since I have connections with China (my wife is fully and my daughters are half Chinese descent), my pick would have to be the World Gathering in China.

Thank you all for your patience while awaiting the details for the Last Maui Intensive. Herein is everything you’ve been waiting for!

WHEN

July 14 - 20, 2008
There IS class on both July 14 and 20, so the last day to arrive on Maui and get settled is July 13. And please don’t plan to depart earlier than July 21. Thank you! (Mahalo!)

WHERE

At Sarala Dandekar’s home studio in Makawao Town, on the island of Maui, in the state of Hawaii, USA. Directions will be provided to you once you are registered, as this is a private home with a dance studio. For Sarala’s family’s privacy only registered attendees may know the location. * Sarala Dandekar will share her incredible, vast knowledge of Odissi Classical Dance from the Temples of Orissa in East India through basic steps and posture, mudras (or hastas, which are the beautiful and meaningful hand gestures of Indian Dance), padas (foot positions) and storytelling dances. Sarala has grown up since the tender age of 3 immersed in the dances of India, living, learning and performing in India and the rest of the world all of her life.

* Elizabeth Artemis Mourat will teach us Turkish AND Other Rromany (“Gypsy”) Dances, culture and tradition, and show over 30 years’s worth of irreplaceable video footage of Roma from many countries, along with her own expert narration. She has not had the opportunity to show all this footage in one place yet until now, so don’t miss this super-rare chance to learn about these illusive people as they are “in the wild” and doing things they already don’t do anymore in today’s rapidly changing world, caught by Artemis’s own cameras during her many research ventures abroad for this purpose.

* Kajira Djoumahna will teach material for all skill levels from her own groundbreaking Format for ATS (American Tribal Style) BellyDance, complete with finger cymbal training and the opportunity to become Certified to teach her Level One Format - just plan on staying an extra 2-3 days after the Intensive for this, and let her know ahead of time that you’re planning on this optional addition to your dance training resume`.

Last day to arrive on Maui, get checked in to your vacation home rental and settled.
There are no hotels on this side of the island. Look for rentals in Makawao, Paia, Kuau or Upcountry. Many dancers enjoy staying at Peace of Maui on Haliimaile Road. I recommend it for those on a budget. We also love Mama’s Fish House very much - it’s not as modestly priced, but it’s well worth it, and has some “good deal rooms” if you book far enough in advance.

You’ll find a travel agent in the “Places to Stay” section as well. Feel free to contact Paula or Cliff instead of finding a place on your own - they know what’s up and are ready to help. They can also find you a car rental and cheap airline tickets, too!

July 14-16, 2008
Classes begin at 11:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. each day. On these dates your teachers are Sarala and Kajira, sharing the class time about half and half, with the “long half” earlier in the day, before the break. One day will start with ATS BD and the next with Odissi Dance and vice versa.

July 17 - Your day off to explore Maui! Head to the beach, for shopping, snorkeling or site-seeing. Grab brochures at the airport or pick something to do before you arrive from the list of Fun Stuff to do on Maui, further down. Have fun, be safe and see you all tomorrow!

July 18-20, 2008
Same class times as earlier in the week, from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. daily. Artemis and Kajira are your teachers for 2 of these last 3 days, and Artemis only for one entire day in order to show more of her priceless video footage.

Bring to Classes the following:
Water and snacks for the break, as these are long class days. You may also wish to bring a towel, notebook and pen. Bring finger cymbals to Kajira’s and Artemis’s classes as well as a hip scarf or belt.
Please do not wear super loose-fitting tops or skirts. Instead, opt for something that is form-fitting (tank or midriff tops, cholis, etc.) with dance or yoga pants so we teachers can best see your legs and posture.

Please Note
that our very first day will include a brief introduction, so we can start to get to know one another in our intimate group, and the last day will include some decompression time to recap all we’ve experienced and to say “aloha.”

It’s a great way to stay in contact and ask questions from others coming or who have been in the past, a wonderful way to find a roomie or flight companion, car rental friend, etc..

PLACES TO STAY

**PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS AREA OF MAUI HAS *ZERO HOTELS*! I do *NOT* recommend staying in Kihei (about 45 minutes-1 hour each way), nor do I care for the hotels in Kahului - because they are not the best and are still 40 minutes drive one way to the studio. Anything like a hotel or timeshare will not only add extra dollars to your gas tank, to your pocketbook (as they cost much more than vacation homes), but also to your long days due to the drive.

DO NOT STAY ANYWHERE ON WEST MAUI SUCH AS LAHAINA OR KAPALUA DURING THE INTENSIVE!

Instead, our solution is to rent vacation homes! These are fully-equipped homes or cottages that usually hold from one person up to 8 on average. They are not hotels. They usually start you out with a roll of toilet paper, but you are expected to supply your own after that. You will have pillows, sheets and towels needed for the number of people in your home and the beds will be made upon arrival, after that it’s up to you.

They all have fully functioning bathrooms and kitchens so you can buy your food at Mana Foods in Paia or Down to Earth in Makawao. Many have hot tubs and great views, some even have outdoor showers as well as indoor for a true paradisaical experience! But don’t expect any maids or staff on call.

Usually there are no restaurants within walking distance on this side of the island unless you get really, really lucky. If you stay at Peace of Maui, you are not far from the world-renowned Haiilimaile General Store and its ono grinds! (Delicious cuisine!) Same for Mama’s Fish House, “yum” to both!

Feel free to find a place on your own from the suggestions below or by other means, or if you prefer to work with a travel agent, Paula is expecting you to call or email her. She’ll keep track of who is with The Maui Intensive (so please make SURE you mention you are with this group) so dancers who are traveling alone and wish to share a home with other dancers can save money.

I also suggest you get one or two cars per home, depending upon the number of people sharing it with you. Then you all can pitch in car for rental and gas, even though it has to be driven by one person only for insurance reasons.

Once the home is full, I’m sure Paula will be happy to supply you with one another’s email addies so you guys can work it out and get started knowing one another even before you’ve arrived!

Paula is also happy to find a home just for you, you and a friend, or you and your family as well. You do not have to stay with other dancers from The Intensive.

Just tell her what you need and she will handle it, or go it on your own as you like (but do rent a car on your own, too, as you really do need one here). Paula can help with packages that include airfare, vacation home and car rental as well.

Please be sure to tell Paula that this year’s Intensive is NOT at the previous ones’s location, which WAS The Studio Maui. The new location is at a private home studio in Makawao, across from St. Joseph’s church.

Maui is one of the biggest vacation destinations in the world, and has been voted by Conde Nast International Magazine as “Best Island” for over 10 years. Many homes have multiple bedrooms and if you get together with your Tribe.net friends, troupe-mates or family, it is the best way to save money!

This is the place nearest Sarala’s studio in Makawao and mentioned earlier in this text, only about a 7-10 minute car ride away. The rooms are private and lock, and have small TVs, places for clothes and beds. The bathroom is shared as is the kitchen facilities. Each room has its own section marked in the huge refridgerators as well as in the cupboards for your personal foodstuffs. It’s very safe and secure even if modest, and would be great to fill with dancers from the Intensive.

www.mamasfishhouse.com/ - we all love this place! It’s right on the beach between Paia Town and Kuau Town. It will take you about 20 minutes or so to leisurely drive up Baldwin Ave. to Sarala’s studio from here. Mama’s features apartments from as low as $60 per night to fancy-schmancy homes on the beach for $475 per night. All apartments are fully self-contained and private.

Even if you don’t stay here, it’s definitely got one of the most onolicious restaurants on the island. Treat yourself to a luncheon or dinner - but make reservations in advance to avoid disappointment. Oh - the $60 per night apartments rent fast and far in advance, so don’t delay in booking your accomodations here if interested. This is where our daughter stays when she visits.

Sarala Dandekar has studied and performed classical Indian dance since childhood. She received intensive training in India from Guru Jhelum Paranjape (Bombay) and Kelucharan Mohapatra, in his village in Bubaneswar, Orissa.
Since 1991, Sarala Dandekar has performed throughout the world, as a soloist in traditional performances as well as working with various dance troupes from the United States, Canada and India.
From 1996 to 1998 Sarala completed her Master’s Degree in Dance Ethnology at York University, Toronto and won prestigious research awards towards her fieldwork in India. She has presented scholarly work at several international dance conferences, and her written work is published in several dance journals and academic texts. In 1997, her collaborative choreography was sponsored by the Ontario Arts Council, the Laidlaw Foundation and Kala Nidhi Fine Arts of Canada.

In 2002 Artwalla Festival of the South Asian Diaspora and the Jacob’s Pillow’s “INSIDE/OUT” 2003 summer series with the Lasandhi Dance Theatre. In addition to classical dance workshops and cultural education programs, Sarala founded the Darshan Dance Company in 2003, a troupe that performs classical choreography and explore principles of sacred geometry, yoga asana and contemporary themes in the spirit of creative exploration.

Sarala has over a decade of teaching experience. Her classes are technically oriented towards mastering the complex physical elements of Odissi dance but also have a strong cultural component, teaching the mythology, philosophy, history and contextual meaning that is so inseparable to the dance form. Students learn basics of the North Indian musical system, raga, tala and laya. She also introduces the idea of sacred dance energy and shifting energies in the body from base to sublime, from mundane to meditative. The eye movements, hand gestures, rhythmic footwork, music and mythology take participants on a journey deeper into their own body work and spirituality while providing a unique hands-on arts education for those curious about India’s rich cultural history.

Odissi Dance Description
Cradled in spirituality, Odissi dance was originally performed in the temples of North Eastern India. Over time, this dance form has transformed and found new life on the stages of India and around the world. The weaving together of eye movements, hand gestures, rhythmic footwork, music and mythology creates a timeless monument to Indian culture.

* Elizabeth Artemis Mourat’s Bio
Artemis has been dancing, teaching and researching dance history in the United States and abroad for her entire adult life. Artemis is of Greek and Turkish descent. She fuses her love of these cultures with strong academic knowledge and excellent dance technique. She brings her spirited and articulate technique to workshops which include information on the history and cultures that generate the dances she teaches. She believes that we can all use art to build bridges across cultures.

Artemis has contributed to many publications. Extensive travel to 33 countries and intensive research into the idioms of the East, women's issues, psychology, ancient history, oriental dance, Rromany (Gypsy) dance and dance ethnology have yielded many manuscripts and articles.

She continues to produce new articles every year. Artemis has an M.A. in psychology, an M.S.W. in social work (with specialized studies in cross cultural awareness) and has done postgraduate work in dance movement therapy. She was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

Her research is used by Egyptian universities, the Middle East Institute in Washington, D.C. and the Library for the Performing Arts in New York. She has lectured, taught and/or performed for Cornell University and Princeton University, National Public Radio (NPR), Voice of America and in Spain, England, France, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Canada, Japan, Greece, Turkey and in 29 states within the United States.

Artemis is a member of the Society of Folk Dance Historians. She uses her writing and her dance and history lectures to fight the racism which exists against the Roma. Her humanitarian interests extended to helping the survivors of hurricane Katrina and she received the key to the city of Lafayette for these efforts. She also continues in her efforts to have Middle Eastern dance receive the recognition and respect that every other legitimate dance form enjoys.

Rromany (Gypsy) Music, Dance and Culture Class Description
In our time together, Artemis will separate fact from fiction about Rromany music, dance, history and culture, including information about many different Rromany cultures throughout the world.
We will compare and contrast the features of the dances and music. There is ample DVD footage. We discuss the truth about Rromany culture and history and how it is quite different from the false stereotyped fantasies and biases that abound.

Kajira has devoted her career to the proliferation of American Tribal Style (ATS) BellyDance (BD). Though skilled in many other traditional dance forms, this specialty chose her due to its “no borders” sense of creativity, its modern approach to ancient ways and its capacity to bring dancers together nearly psychically through its unique structured group improvisational dancing.

Qualifications include 8 years under Carolena Nericcio’s tutelage and as a member of her performance troupes, 2 years under Suhaila & Jamila Salimpour, almost 9 years working on her own innovations on the FCBD Format to develop the Kajira Djoumahna / BlackSheep BellyDance (KD/BSBD) Format for ATS BD (and still going), nearly a decade on Staff at the prestigious Mendocino Middle Eastern Music and Dance Camp as well as on Staff 3 years at Folk Tours Camp (learning from fellow dancer and musician Staff the whole time), training in *many* styles of Middle Eastern, Rromany and Folkloric Dance, with current cross-training under master teacher Sarala Dandekar in Odissi, a devotional Classical Dance form the temples of East India.

This year the Russian Rainbow Gathering will take place in Altai, one
of the most magical places on the planet, - sacred mountains between
Siberia and Mongolia. The vast territory of Altai with its magnificent
mountain tops and lakes of pure water is still a home to ancient
tribes of hunters practicing pagan religion and shamanism. Their
unusual rituals and strange fairy tales are full of infinite respect

creative source. Wild animals in local legends, humbly obey the
ancient order of forest life; and "Altai's Master" is invisibly
watching every man who walks this land and strictly judging human deeds.

The place of the Gathering will be on the path of the Total Solar
Eclipse August 1, 2008.

family~loose ends in hawi...

aloha family,
the car that was moved from the lighthouse...how was that handled? it seems that what happened is that the car was moved to the land next door~to chad and jen's land (the people whose land was vandalized by the iced kids)...

i talked to jen today, after hearing from two others in town that chad was unhappy with finding this junked car on is land, and she said that chad has taken his backhoe (or something) and moved it, but there remains some discontent because "someone" put a junked car onto his land.

and guess what, family? in lieu of any person in particular to address this with personally, the negative feeling is coming to the family...

so, this is a call out~if there is a contact person who we know moved the car~in the family or hired out~who can be brought in here (in person or by phone) to bring a bit of peace and understanding for what was likely a mistake or misunderstanding, please please please let me know. even just someone to talk with chad, get things clear, and say, "i''m sorry" would be helpful. like i said, car's been moved, but unpleasant feelings remain, and we don't need or want that~for chad and jen, or for the family.

Proposals to restrict the flow of information for 2009 Hawai'i Gathering

I am a strong proponent of freedom and openness ("information wants to be free"). But in Hawai'i we face a severe challenge:

Some hawai'i residents-- as progressive as they are-- have deeply ingrained biases against us, basically thinking we are hippies in the negative sense of the word-- naive, dirty, drugged, ecologically insensitive, and so on-- you've heard the litany. Even worse, they may not know or even care if this is actually the case, yet they will help perpetuate this disinformation anyway. Disinformation causes unnecessary fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD), and may lead to violence or the threat of violence against us.

Disinformation is a form of psy-ops, and forms a climate of information warfare. We didn't ask for this, it was imposed upon us.

My first proposal is that the location of the 2009 gathering will not be announced on the website. Not even any hint of what region. So, how will people actually find out where the gathering is? Word of mouth, of course. But also, my second proposal is that I (or other people) will be willing to send out the directions to the staging ground only-- over private tribe mail to anybody who can convince me that they are interested in coming to the gathering. How will you convince me? If you know me personally, just send me a tribe message reminding me who you are.

Otherwise, your only hope to get the directions over the internet is to send me (or somebody else who knows), via a private tribe mail, a short essay (50 words or more) about why you enjoy rainbow gatherings, if you have attended any previously-- or why you think you would enjoy a rainbow gathering, if you have not (please no plagiarizing). And to make sure you really get my attention: tell me whether or not you plan on bringing or consuming alcohol at the gathering. :-p

Yes, these essays can be faked. But so what-- if somebody who wants to shut us down takes the time to try to write an essay about why they enjoy rainbow gatherings, they will have at least put themselves in our shoes for the brief time it takes to pen the essay. Then this whole process will have accomplished at least that. Walking in somebody else's shoes is a beautiful spiritual practice. Plus, I will be able to look forward to reading positive tribe messages.

Don't wait to the last minute folks. Your essays will be due before whenever I get my last chance to use the internet. :-), and often I'm rushed in the last week before I head out, or I may need to ask you a couple of questions, so leave ample time for some back and forth dialog. And never "misunderestimate" technological snafus/downtime, and the learning curve of using tribe mail, if you haven't yet.

Yes, those who want to shut us down can figure out other ways to pinpoint where we are on the map. All it takes is one blabbermouth (loose lips sink ships, as they say, so use your best judgment). Or maybe they will see our smoke and hear our happy drum beats in the horizon. Or maybe they will stalk our staging ground and try to follow somebody in. Oh well, we're doing the best we can, learning and growing. And if we are forced to move from one site to another, really, it's nothing we can't handle together as a community.

Feedback or comments are welcome on this forum, or at any of our upcoming councils. I really hope the weather clears for Wed, Feb 20, so we can get a good view of the full moon rising partially eclipsed, and I hope that the fact that directions will not be announced on this website will not discourage anybody who wants to from coming.

aloha friends i really doubt many read this but if you do i also know alot about the gatherrrigs i hawaii.i scouted the hawi site and by gthe way helped haul out 4 truckloads of trash and one junk car.i also started the seed of our moder day hawaii gatherring 4 years ago and was very intrigral at ivery event.i am also one of the rainbows who heatedly told some fakers they were fakers.i feel m etta talks kinda negatively about the gatherrig.land use issues that i call da aina come up randommly and are felt by all who are conected to this magical place.at first i felt like i let my rainbow tribe down after hawi but god that i call akua came and lifted up her wings.ya we had to move a few times but are we just a bunch of pussies?trying to have 12 day regional in hawaii which is all about land use issues right now i 08,a 12 day peace and love fest i this day and age of no child left behind is amazing that we have pulled it off at all.and by the way metta is the man he did really step it up and really served his community well so dont feel their is anamosity towards me and metta i love the guy and his family for who they are not just what they do.but i feel he is missrepresenting alot,this expierience for all invovled was onerwhelmingly beautiful. that god let us gather i waipio which would never had happened if we planned it i personally was told by bishop museum last year at ka alu alu afdter being photoed to never try it in waipio.well we not oly tried we succeeded.waipio is not only for the rich white people who ride horses all over the valley that shit and destroy the aina.think all who were against were not land owners they were power trippers.and ya i told the guy who wrote the letter he was a pun and you kow wkhat he is a punk.but metta yelled louder at me than i did at the guy.do two wrongs make a right and the guy says be mellow ya metta be mellow.i had the greastest time in waipio ineryone i know who was there did too.dont believe the hype listen to your heart.i love your gatherring idea i just want to know did you plan to cut me out.because i am on no power trip anywho will actually focallize and mae the dream a reality is welcome to fill my shoes i have been wanting to tae them off anyways and play some bluegrass with the boys.

in August in SERBIA !
There has been a strong and visionary invitation by the Serbian Family,
and we want to continue the >angel walk< along the balcan...
By now I can tell you there is a dedicated & focused team of scouts
including sisters & brothers from Serbia, Croatia, Poland... Everybody
is welcome to join

Our hope at Bosnian Balkan Rainbow in 2007 was to create a place and a space whereby our own organically grown food could be eaten at the gathering in 2008. It was with hope that the scouts went forth to find the vision and place for the meeting place in good time and not at the last minute.

It was with hope that the gathering would produce something new instead of the same old stuff. We are looking to strengthen the spirit and spiritual calling of the rainbow family at this time...

Making an international-style gathering in Hawai'i a reality

There was some concern this year that the internet played a role in helping to get our Hawi site shut down, in helping to get our first site in Waipi'o shut down, and in helping our NIMBY friends in the larger community work more coordinatedly to try to shut us down completely.

First, I disagree that the internet itself was the cause of our problems. The manner that information was posted this year was not much different than last year, and last year was a still a success in the sense that we did not have to move the gathering. It could be argued that's because last year not many people knew about the website, and now they do-- both our fellow gatherers, and our nimby neighbours. We have to find a balance in the flow of information such that our fellow gatherers from all over the world can find us and not wander around the community possibly causing problems while looking for us.

Even if no information had been posted on the website, the Hawi site was bad enough that we probably would have had to move the gathering anyway. Our scouts being mostly punatics who did not successfully engage enough with the larger community-- even though we knew kohala was a densely populated area-- we did not know the controversial history of the site, and we walked right into the middle of a situation that was bad and had been bad long before our time. It could be argued that if the site had been posted on the internet earlier-- we would have found out how bad it was before the official start day. But we cannot post this kind of sensitive information too early on the internet.

Information about the gathering needs to be very judiciously handed out. Nimby neighbours are a powerful force to contend with, and the sooner they are tipped off to our location, the sooner they can coordinate their efforts to shut us down. While neighbours say that we must "ask for permission" before we "descend" onto a community, the truth is permission would almost never be granted-- not without dramatically changing the nature of what a rainbow gathering is... portapotty-rentals, liability wavers, admission fees-- in short, becoming a legitimate non-profit or commercial event-- which is really the antithesis of what a rainbow gathering is all about. Our only salvation is to find a site remote enough that we can complete our prayer for the earth in our own way without being disturbed by the outside world, where we can leave enough clues such that the truly dedicated can find us, but not enough to make it easy for members of the larger community to pinpoint us on a map.

Imagine a very remote gathering site-- we'll call it Point C.
Nearest bus stop is an unspecified number of miles away, point B
Nearest public water spigot, hopefully at a little park with some other amenities, is point A.

In this scenario, a month long hike-in gathering with no parking area, I propose that only point A be posted on the internet and made as public knowledge-- even earlier than the official start date so the seed camp can open to all. People who want to get to the gathering will have to wait at Point A, maybe for days, and this will be the only staging ground. Rather than just driving up and parking, getting to the gathering site will be a rite of initiation and passage, purifying, exhilerating, spiritually cleansing, in a way that only backpackers can understand.

Should we have to move the site... since we only brought in what we carried on our backs, it should be less daunting. We can move together as a community to the next very remote and secretive site and so on until our prayer for the earth is satisfied. Welcome to the first ever international-style Hawai'i rainbow gathering!

Private Land vs. Hike-in Gathering

The turmoil of the 2008 January Hawai'i rainbow gathering has sent shockwaves through the international rainbow community that I keep in touch with over the internet. The international rainbow community suffered a double-blow this season with the flash-flooding and sickness at the Intergalactic Gathering site in Mexico. We can only hope the gathering this month in Ocala, Florida fairs better.

Many international gatherings are held on private land. However, this comes with tradeoffs. From what I've read, and remember this is second or third hand information, the recent Intergalactic Gathering site in Mexico was on private land that individuals within the rainbow family may have been attempting to purchase. Realizing no purchase was forthcoming, the owner of that site may have been anxious to get people off his land: not a good case study for private land.

So, for what its worth, rainbow folks and focalizers from around the world, are encouraging us in Hawai'i to not give up the idea of gathering on public land, and that a burly hike-in gathering-- even if it means we have to hike in every drop of drinking water several miles-- even if it means the gathering is technically illegal and might get moved-- is preferable to a cushy pseudo-gathering on somebody's private land, where we MAY have to deal again with the political vagaries of neighbours, associations, zoning regulations, mafia-like quasi-governments real and supposed, and possibly even anti-rainbow vigilantes.

A hike-in gathering appeals to my adventurous side. We may find a site that doesn't have parking, which means every single man, woman, child, piece of equipment, and drop of drinking water has to be bused, biked, or hitched as close as it can, and be hiked in the rest of the way. A gathering like this will attract only the most hardy, dedicated, and healthy souls, and the hedonistic partiers will have no choice but to stay far, far away. (It may also keep most authority figures who may or may not want to shut us down away too-- but remember that in the modern history of hawaii rainbow gatherings, we have NEVER had trouble with the government, it has been 100% aloha.) I can see already that this kind of hike-in gathering will set the stage for some serious spiritual growth for all involved, as the community will have to act with complete unity to achieve even the basic logistics of a successful gathering.

I hate ending every post with a plea for more scouting energy... but this is what we need if we in Hawai'i are to build a true rainbow gathering up to international standards, ratcheting up our circles from a peak of 60 to a peak of 300, and maybe our duration from a mere 13 days to a full lunation (from new moon to new moon, the norm of international gatherings)-- which we very well might accomplish next year, in spite of all the challenges, if the right site presents itself.

The whole world is watching us.

We are LEARNING

The 2008 Hawai'i Rainbow Gathering is over. I'm trying to stay somewhat objective, because I never sought to be a site focalizer. I've only lived on this island for a couple of years, and I'm kept constantly busy with family and business. I do not have time to scour the island vetting out sites. My intended role for this gathering and for future gatherings, was and is simply to help with internet promotion, and help to run kiddie village in a proper and wholesome manner. However, in order to report accurately on the internet, I needed to know what was really going on, and I submit here my findings with the hope that we can learn from this year and make the 2009 gathering better in almost every way.

This gathering touched a lot of nerves and triggered a lot of angry energy, both among nearby residents and gatherers. Waipi'o residents have some legitimate points to be angry about-- and we gatherers should NEVER have gotten angry back-- that completely smacks in the face of everything that rainbow gatherings stand for, and makes me embarrassed and saddened to even have been a part of this whole ordeal. Rainbow Warriors fight using ONLY the weapons of peace and love. Especially for those who conspire against us. Gandhi was successful in part because he turned many of his strongest opponents into his strongest allies. I think some of the parties involved in spreading their angry energy this year now acknowledge this essential bit of international wisdom. So, good we are LEARNING.

As for the conspiracy against us: happily, I can say there is no Waipi'o Mafia. The community has meetings like any other community, and people talk, and yes, I imagine the bigger land owners have more influence. Early drafts of the letters circulating against us made the false impression that we were defying the will of some Hawaiian Nationalist quasi-government that was threatening us all with certain destruction. Meanwhile, the conspiracy against us raged on the internet, with completely fabricated rumours being sent via private tribe mail that the gathering had been cancelled and the police and the health department were getting involved. The truth? Long time Waipi'o residents know the police almost never come down to Waipi'o. The health department has no jurisdiction. No violent locals on ice attacked us. The gathering was ultimately tolerated, and we made good on our promise to love the land, hand clearing streambeds and fallow kalo lo'is.

What went wrong with the Hawi site? I got this disturbing private tribe message:

aloha - I feel it very important to share with all what is the proper protocol in Hawaii, especially the older villages such as Kohala. Even with the best intentions - even when you are approaching to honor a person, place or thing - you seek the permission of the elders in the community and you wait for their answer and accept it - what ever it is. You include them you do not descend upon them. I am surprised with the years of this intention in Hawaii that this extremely important protocol is seemingly not even known! This is in part why the group met with unkindness here. What is pono - correct and rightgeous is what matters and there is a proper age old protocol to this. The idea of tending to ones own ahupua'a is also at play. I was told by one rainbow-er that our community did not seem to care! very offensive - of course we care and hundreds of volunteers do this work all the time. Camping is only legal at Mahukona and Kapaa - where there is sanitation control. Had this been handled differently - the outcome would have been much different! Lighthouse is the premier surf spot so the territorial imperative of surfers which can be rough was also at play. I would urge following the age old protocol, camping legally and allowing the community to be a part of things... it is obviously very important!

So, there you have it. Kohala is likely too populated to try to camp anywhere reasonably accessible without the direct permission of a private landowner. And offensive "rainbow-ers" opening their yaps give karmic headaches to us all. I observed one interaction between a gatherer and an angry resident checking us out, and there were angry and bitter words coming from both parties. As we have learned this is NOT the way of the Rainbow Warrior, and if we insist on disrespecting even angry locals threatening us with violence, we will find ourselves with no place to gather. For the record, though, it was definitely NOT the surfers who rousted us, but rather those who appeared to want to use the site to smoke ice and illegally hunt. The overwhelming majority of Hawi residents I talked with STRONGLY supported us, and I am saddened that a credible threat of (possibly iced-out) violence forced our hand into a tactical retreat. One thing is for sure: that land still needs a lot of love, and our prayer for the earth has exposed some of this truly wicked darkness to the light.

Why Kohala in the first place, when there are far less populated areas of the island? The vision was and is simply this: to cover all four corners of the Hawai'i Island diamond: we've done Puna in the East, Ka'u in the South, now Waipi'o in the North. For next year, the vision has come to scout Kona in the West. Like Kohala, Kona is so populated, that it is hard to envision a gathering anywhere but on private land. Some site focalizers are optimistic such a site can be found, and our four year long vision can be realized. However, any good site will be considered, and this year has taught us the importance of having a well-scouted backup site. So if you have any energy to put forth to help us with scouting and site focalizing, please, this is the year we need you.

If anybody has the skills, let's expand this marketing scenario: why on earth would a private land owner want to host us? Free labour for one thing... we are passionate about projects that help the 'aina. Free publicity-- we'll bring people to your land from all over the world, and, as the ABC coverage proves, the world is curious and watching us. A sense of helping a people in need-- all we seek is to gather in the cathedral of nature and and commence a multi-day prayer for the earth. After the gathering has moved on, you'll have your pick of motivated WWOOFer type travelers. It is a winning situation for everybody.

So the vision for next year: 2009 Feb 1-13 Hawai'i Rainbow Gathering, possibly in Kona. 2009 Feb 9 will be a Full Moon Penumbral Eclipse, and it will be visible from Hawai'i.

2008 Gathering Update as of Friday, Jan 18

Howzit Everybody,

"So," I asked to a group that included some key rainbow focalizers, the property owner, a hawaiian auntie kupuna, and several residents of Waipio.
"Should I say on the website that the gathering is cancelled, or what?"
"No," said the kupuna, her eyes starting to water, her kuleana as deep as Hawai'i Nei itself, "Please don't."
She told us about how she felt we, the hawaii rainbow family, really were taking care of and respecting the land, bringing people together from all walks of life, all races, and many nations, and helping to show them how to live in and love the earth together in community, like in the old ways. She said I should use the power of the website to give this struggling gathering a push forward.

Her bedroll was ready to go, she was ready to gather with the rest of us.

Yet by now, half the gathering had already been scared off.

These residents who opposed us mischaracterized us from the beginning, rehashing the same tired counterculture stereotypes that were already old and off-base in my parent's generation. I have to say, I don't think they actually believed this-- the hard drugs and hepatitis thing-- because if we truly were as unwholesome as they protrayed, we would already have been run off, private property notwithstanding. Instead, we found ourselves facing off extremely non-neighbourly behaviour-- our signs being cracked in half, guys drinking beer intimidatingly from behind a "No Hippies" sign on a public access road. An anonymously dropped off letter purporting to be from some kind of authority, filled with complete hearsay, threatened "more persuasive" action to be taken against us. Then we heard about the death threats against a resident who supported us.

The question became-- did a respected land owner-- an actual land owner, not just a leaseholder-- born and raised in Waipio, have the right to host a gathering on his own private land? As of when I left earlier today, it was decided that the gathering would continue-- but only for those who had already have arrived. Those who have not yet made the journey are respectfully asked by the land owner to not come to limit the impact of the gathering, both ecologically and politically. So for those who have already made it, have a great gathering. Everybody else-- see you next year-- or maybe at the Malama Ki "non-rainbow" gathering this weekend.

If you don't want a gypsy caravan like this to happen again-- and to instead enjoy a properly long and uninterrupted gathering, don't leave the scouting and focalizing to somebody else. We need a vastly larger inventory of good sites and we need to keep exploring to find out just exactly how far we can go before we get slapped down. We need functioning scout councils, and we need long-- and perhaps multiple and simultaneous-- seed camps to get a better feel for sites before the international caravan arrives. We need awesome PR and a portfolio of happy landowners who have been hosts and who may want to host us again in the future. And above all, we need to practice what we preach, and demonstrate our love for the 'aina by keeping it clean, and keeping the larger community in mind when we gather.

Otherwise, the era of Big Island gatherings may be drawing to a close.

Tickets to Rebirth 2008 (May 15-18) are going on sale on January 25th!

Online ticket sales will begin at 8 AM on Friday January 25th on the Ka Pilina website (www.kapilina.org). There will be a total of 50 tickets available online in the first tier ($40), and 100 available in each succeeding tier ($50, $60, and $70).

We will have tickets available at outlets on each island starting in early February, check the Ka Pilina website for full details when they are available. Big Island outlets will have a total of 50 of the first tier of tickets ($40) while neighbor island outlets will start by selling second tier tickets ($50).

2008 January Waipio Gathering -- MORE INFO

2008 Hawaii Regional Rainbow Gathering, January 13-27, 2008

NEW LOCATION: WAIPIO VALLEY

More information: there is a new route to the site of the rainbow gathering. First of all, there is no vehicular access, so please don't even try. From the parking lot, it is a two hour hike into the gathering. There are no shortcuts that are completely pono with the residents. We have a route to the gathering that uses 100% legit public access. At the bottom of the hill, take a right to the beach. Walk across the beach, over the ankle deep river or rivers. Then at the end of the beach on the other side of the valley, take King's Trail that runs sort of up along the side of the valley. Beyond the waterfall, there will be signs directing you to the gathering. This route should be under 2 miles. Repeat: THIS IS A HIKE-IN GATHERING.

No tresspassing, and no picking anybodies fruit without getting permission.

We have been invited to gather on private land in Waipio Valley, and we have gotten permission directly from the landowners, and they will join us for the gathering, and they are good people. This gathering is open to all who are willing and able to treat the land with love and respect. We will be given lots of good information on this "holy grail" of rainbow locations and it is an amazing place to be invited to.
On the top of the valley, there is a parking lot for non-4x4 vehicles. There is security at this parking lot (it is patrolled). Everybody who needs a ride should congregate at the parking lot at the top of the hill. Hopefully we can coordinate the shuttling of people and supplies down into the gathering area.

There is drinking water down at the site. The beach is public access, but our camps will be on private land back in the valley, about a 10-15min drive.

We have been invited to gather on private land in Waipio Valley, and we have gotten permission directly from the landowners, and they will join us for the gathering, and they are good people. This gathering is open to all who are willing and able to treat the land with love and respect. We will be given lots of good information on this "holy grail" of rainbow locations and it is an amazing place to be invited to. The last rainbow gathering in Waipio, I heard, was maybe 14 years ago, back when gathering was a bit easier.

On the top of the valley, there is a parking lot for non-4x4 vehicles. There is security at this parking lot (it is patrolled). Everybody who needs a ride should congregate at the parking lot at the top of the hill. Hopefully we can coordinate the shuttling of people and supplies down into the gathering area.

For those with 4x4 vehicles (ONLY, this is for real), get to the bottom of the hill. Take a left (not a right). Keep going following the road until you get to the big river. (you'll cross two small ones to get to the big one). This is the local Waipio bar, filled with friendly people. There will be markers to the property and directions posted, and local people will be friendly and happy to direct us to the site.

There is drinking water down at the site. The beach is public access, but our camps will be on private land back in the valley, about a 10-15min drive.

I'm going, and is just about everybody in here the Holding Camp at Artesia's.

I'm putting a small group together that want to give Hawaii a try and help plant trees and make trails and garden areas. It only requires one short day a week to cover camp space and with even a lousy job (The biggest town on the Island, Hilo, is only fifteen miles away) you can save enough to buy your own 3 acre lot in the neighborhood. Water falls from the sky out here (180"/yr) and when the changes come we have the resources to survive.

We spent the night near the proposed site in Kohala, walked the land, and got a good feel for what we are in for in the upcoming gathering.

The Good

The proposed Kohala site is ocean front, and in many ways BETTER than last year's site in Ka'u. The forest is not thorny, mostly ironwood, with scattered palms-- even some cocos. The ecosystem is thriving with mushrooms and berries. There is a good area for main circle, kiddie village, etc. The stretch of coast by the site does not seem particularly used for fishing or surfing, although there is a well known surf spot somewhat nearby.

The Bad

To give you an idea of how EXTREMELY BAD the roads are (from the parking area to the gathering site), my 4x4 midsize pickup, which had no problems getting in and out of last year's site, even fully loaded with water, was not able to get all the way into this year's site. There is no choice but to make the parking area/A-camp a good distance away from the actual gathering site. This will make cleanup, and water and supply hauling more labour intensive.

The Ugly

The area is trashed. Our beloved key focalizers have already paid over $200 to get a vehicle professionally towed out of where main circle will be. As of when we left, it was still stuck, blocking the only vehicular access between the parking area and the gathering site. In a way, this is a good thing because, if it stays, there will not be any vehicle traffic into the site.

The area by main circle, where the junked car was, has obviously been used as an eco-unfriendly party spot. The raison d'etre of rainbow gatherings is to heal the earth. This is our chance to step up to our greater responsibilities, to prove that not only can we clean up our own mess, but that of others as well. Our sincere hope is that after the gathering is over, this spot will inspire others to keep it clean, and to let it be reborn as an oasis for nature. Please, please, come and be prepared to help. Bring gloves, trash bags, and lots of love to share.

MY name is Just Tom and back on the Mainland I used to travel about with a very friendly chicken on my shoulder,. Seems they are easier to get along with in some ways than people. I bring my friendly chickens to Burning Man, the Rainbow Gatherings, the Harmony Festival besides bringing them to the town park, the breakfast with out door seating, the hardware store and more. Kids and adults love to cuddle my chickens and they seem to like it too. I'm desperatly in need of a CHICKEN! Preferably young, Rooster or hen but it's gotta have 5 toes, dark skin, and very fluffy featers. I need to find a JAPANEESE SILKIE chicken. they sell them at the Pahoa Feed store, people buy them, I know they are here. It's just that MOST choickens here are a wild variety or fighting cocks. These are not fighters. I have had two dozen roosters of this breed and they have never been hostile to anyone.

So if you have an extra Silkie you'd like to sell, or if you know a neighbor that might have one please let me know. They come pure white, jet black, brown, red, or blue. But they all have five or maybe 6 toes and dark skin. Please see some pics enclosed. err.. maybe I can't upload a pic here.. Well these are really fluffy chickens they look more like rabbitts than feathered birds. I got some real cute pics too..

We, the Aloha Family on the Big Island, are pleased to invite one and all from around the world to our 2007 gathering. Please bring your aloha, vegetarian food, blissware, and acoustic musical instruments. Please leave behind alcohol and radios!

The Big Island Gathering is particularly auspicious this year as it falls on the Full Moon which coincides with the beginning of Spring. It is the first Full Moon, called Ka'elo, in the Hawaiian Lunar Calendar.

The exact astronomical time of Imbolc, the beginning of Spring, is Feb 3, 7:05pm HST, the precise midpoint of the Sun half-way through that slice of the sky known as Aquarius.

Furthermore, the gathering also falls on one of the last significant lunar extremes of last year's Northern Lunistice, the culmination of an 18.6-year cycle.

Many at the gathering will also aim to raise conciousness to the short-sighted planned development of an "eco-" resort at Punalu'u. This development will endanger species, not provide many jobs to locals, and will surely spoil one of Hawai'i's last pristine beaches and coastal areas. A bitter irony is that a spokesman for the development corporation is the son of the late Jaques Cousteau, who surely would have been horrified by the project.

Howzit everybelly,

It's hard to convey the excitement circulating around the island about this gathering. With nothing but simple fliers and lots of word of mouth, mindshare is buzzing even among people who are "not into rainbow gatherings". This gathering will be more accessible than last year's, so more people than ever will make the drive to come and check it out.

For those who know what rainbow gatherings are all about, this is a good opportunity to engage the newbies on core rainbow ethics-- especially PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT. Don't leave nothin'-- not even somebody else's cig butts or bottle caps.

Please let's spread the word that we WILL leave the site cleaner than we found it. Malama da 'aina! We have done this every year-- last year I personally hauled out two truckloads of trash, much of which wasn't even our own. We, the Hawai'i Rainbow Family, are also extremely sensitive to cultural and ecological concerns. As I write, core focalizers are talking about raising money to tow abandoned vehicles already somewhat near the site-- even before the gathering begins!

This year's (most probable) site is possibly cold, wet, and rainy this time of year, so come prepared. Bring extra blankets, tarps, flashlights, dry firewood, and at least one 5- 8 gallon container of water per person! There is NO fresh water on the site.

Last year's gathering was primarily revolving around three firecircles: Main Circle, Main Kitchen and Kiddie Village. If you have kids, definitely consider camping near kiddie village. If you like to plug in, Main Kitchen is ground zero for heroic volunteers. Main Circle will be more raucous than ever this year, in part because of the easy accessibility and non-rainbow gawkers/partiers. This is why I am personally focalizing a counterbalancing quiet night scene at kiddie village, open to very quiet acoustic music and coversation, maybe chai or 'awa, but definitely no alcohol/addiction jonesing. And, please, no waking the babies!

Wherever and however you plug in at the gathering this year, I'm sure you'll have a fabulous time. It all is coming together rather magically.

At the Gatherings I'm known for creative plumbing solutions. I have a special eye for public health and good water. I have good cost effective ideas to provide good clean drinking water completly aside from the 10,000 gallon tank of gunk you ned for Fire protection and maybe a years supply of laundry.

So I've found a nich and I'm looking to help YOU build a small cleanable water catchment system just for your drinking water. The rain tatstes good. and it is healthy if drank fresh and not mixed in with a lot of biology and then filtered out. Let's keep it clean from the start? Easy? I'll be moving to camp and hope to help Jaris at Mawa Gardens construct a kitchen. Maybe I can set up a cool little system with a hand pump and small resevoir in the cieling or above. So then we can just stick a tube from the pump into the fresh water and pump it up to the reserve 4 strokes per gallon. And then we will have the plumbed hose from the resevoir feeding little faucetts that are only for drinking water.

HEALTH INFO: I have a bit of it from here and there. It seems the QUALITY of your dishwater is less important than the need for the dishes to be DRIED. Please take notice of this. I learned it in New Hampshire when lightning took out our deep well water pump. So I told the Insuranch guy: "Were gonna have a conference in two days. We can't get a deep pump in in time. Can I buy a jet pump and use a surface well?" The insuranch said okay but then I called Public health and told them my plans. Syaing I am not sure but since the well is rather uncapped I think human fieces has gone in. And they said it was thus NOT suitable for drinking but I had to take special precaution that the dishes were dried well.

So I help that info helps someone someday.

The Sun, Moon and Earth create a Y2K, Cosmic Style!

A better time to celebrate a truly once in a thousand year event arrives some nine days earlier than the official end of the millennium. This year's December 22 winter solstice coincides with a full moon -- a combination that happens only every 3 decades or so. But that's not the only celestial oddity for the day: the moon also reaches perigee, its closest point to the Earth. So this solstice, which brings together the year's lowest sun and longest night, comes at the same time as the closest moon -- and a full moon to boot. The last time the full moon, lunar perigee, and winter solstice fell on the same day was in 1866.

But even then the moon merely reached its closest approach of the month. On this December 22, the moon will be at its nearest point of the year. It's the kind of event that would have driven [so called] "primitive" cultures bonkers!! And believe it or not, there's more... The day of Earth's maximal tilt (when the axis is directed most fully away from the sun) will also combine with a very CLOSE sun...which reaches its nearest point to the earth, 12 days later. The confluence of all these forces at "the very least" will brew up huge proxigean tides, also called "closest of the close moon" tides. They will extend a few, but crucial, inches farther then normal, ranging from reaching the boardwalk highs to lows that uncover rarely exposed marine life. [...snip...]

The cosmic culprits responsible for all this drama -- the moon and sun occupy opposite ends of the sky on December 21 - 22. A full moon will rise just as the sun goes down in its leftmost position of the year along the horizon. This exceptionally plump moon will seem a full 14% wider then than it appeared at apogee, its farthest point from the Earth.

Long ago and early on in the experience of using calendars, year's end always coincided with the winter solstice. That changed during the switch from the Julian to the more accurate Gregorian calendar, beginning in the sixteenth century. What seems to have been lost was a much more appropriate time, from a celestial point of view, to celebrate the passing of 1,000 years... on December 22, when the sun, moon and Earth perform a truly, genuinely, once in a millennium dance......

This year the full moon will occur on the winter solstice, Dec. 22, commonly called the first day of winter. Since a full moon on the winter solstice is occurring in conjunction with a lunar perigee (point in the moon's orbit that is closest to Earth), the moon will appear about 14% larger than it does at apogee (the point in its elliptical orbit that is farthest from the Earth). Since the Earth is also several million miles closer to the sun at this time of the year than in the summer, sunlight striking the moon is about 7% stronger making it brighter. Also, this will be the closest perigee of the Moon of the year since the moon's orbit is constantly deforming. If the weather is clear and there is a snow cover where you live, it is believed that even car headlights will be superfluous.

On December 21st, 1866, the Lakota Sioux took advantage of a similar combination of occurrences and staged a devastating retaliatory ambush on soldiers in the Wyoming Territory. In laymen's terms it will be a super bright full moon, much more than the usual AND it hasn't happened this way for 133 years!

Our ancestors 133 years ago saw this. Our descendants 100 or so years from now will see this again.

The Winter Solstice will be very highly charged this year, as it coincides with the Full Moon and with the exact midpoint of the Cosmic Birth cycle that began on 8/11/99, and will come to completion on 5/5/2000. For global meditations and ceremonies, this will be the most auspicious day since the Eclipse and Grand Cross week of last August. ...[The Winter] Solstice is traditionally the most important festival of the year as it marks the birth of the Solar Child at the time of receding Winter light, and is thus the moment of affirming faith in the re-emergence of earthly life in the Spring, and also, symbolically, of the soul's survival beyond death.

Dec 22: Full Moon in Cancer, opposite Sun in Capricorn. This opposition -- at 7:33 am HT [Hawaii Time] / 5:33 pm UT -- embodies the classic tensions between disciplined intellect and wealth of feeling; perseverance in pursuit of professional goals and the inner nurturing energy of domesticity; the mature male and the youthful female, symbolized by, among other things, Father Time and the New Year Baby.

In some Native American calendars, the Month of the Snow Goose begins on this day. Soyal, first day of winter, in the Hopi calendar. Among the Hopi, Zuni and other native peoples of the American Southwest, this day is the feast of Soyala, the annual festival of purification and renewal.

This Full Moon is also one of the five great annual festivals in the Chinese Taoist calendar: Wang Mu, or the Empress Mother through whom the Tao of Creation and Destruction manifests on Earth. As Wang Mu is honored at the year's strongest moment of Yin, or feminine energy, she is also identified as the Shen, or Deity of the Earth element, North, Winter and the color White.

In the Japanese Shinto calendar this day is sacred to the Sun Goddess Amataseru-no-Mikuni, heroine of one of the world's great and typical festivals of the retreat and return of the Sun. When her brother, the raucous storm god and trickster Susanoo-no-Mikuni, insulted and ridiculed her, she withdrew into a cave and caused Earth to suffer in cold and darkness until other gods gathered to sing and dance outside Amaterasu's cave until they charmed her back out. Among the universal symbolisms of such stories is the principle that light avoids wild and violent action, and can tame it only by limiting it in patterns of order, symbolized by the music and the dance.

This is, in addition to all these other things, an especially beautiful night for overnight meditations and ceremonies, with the Moon Full and Venus brilliant as the evening star.

Why I love rainbow gatherings

Those who know me well, know I live in multiple domains. I am equally at home in the heart of a big city, and deep in the wilderness fully off-grid and miles from civilization-- where I live currently. I am a computer scientist, my passion is open source software customization. I develop powerful database driven web applications for various clients, mostly from Oahu. My job is 100% telecommuting. I also love permaculture and organic farming.

I met my wife at a rainbow gathering near Nelson, BC, in 2000. We now have 2 beautiful children. I have a strong commitment to rainbow gatherings because I feel they have played a major role in my spiritual awakening-- which seems odd if you have already written off rainbow gatherings as big parties for mooching if not vampiric, inebriated yet jonesing hippies-- and it's true, you will find these types in various numbers at any gathering. BUT, you will also find, if you look hard enough, small circles of those kindred souls who have found some degree of genuine self-actualization.

These are quiet types, they tend to make their shanti fire circles out on the periphery, up hill and away from the hubbub if possible. Many have traveled the world and found some degree of economic buoyancy that enables them to truly live the lifestyle of their own choosing-- for the long term. These are people who have often participated in radical political direct action, or have volunteered for the needy in disaster areas. These are people who love gathering herbs, preparing natural medicine, looking up into the sky and identifying planets and constellations and the full moon... in heartsongs, they follow the polite norms of musicianship, regardless of their skills, never overpowering, always nurturing, not rushing, savouring the quiet moments. These are the rainbow warriors.

Spiritual community is vital to almost any path. What is more solitary than modern life in Babylon, where we live packed with neighbours we don't know, isolated from the community villages that our ancestors took for granted? I have come to see the whole point of vision quests and other solitary retreats, including the solitary retreat of modern life, is that one has the opportunity to bring BACK what one has learned while alone to share with the community. I have come to see that this is one of the great opportunities of rainbow gatherings.

My name is Just Tom. You may rember me from one of the Hot Water setups I did at the Nationals. Often with a bathtub. Or maybe we met while I was pulling my little cart and offering sprays of cool water. Or maybe you met me with my chicken.

I have come to Hawaii, couple weeks ago, to visit with a woman and things did not turn out so well. So So Well. Things are all very friendly of course, I have been a very good guest.

Do you know what you call a Rainbow Bro who has broken up with his girlfriend?
Homeless! And that's where we are at now foolks. I need at least three weeks to pick up an air ticket. I'm not at all broke, just cheap when there is no income. But I have skills to share I wash dishes, I do electronic stuff, Yard work, and handyman. I even brought some tools.

So this lonly bro is gonna be checking back here and more likely my own e-mail box. which is just-tom AT mailcity DOT com

brother bear of the quebec family (i think it was him...?) gathered several different song books that have been floating around for a while and compiled them into one big book. i have it via email, although not yet in print (need a printer for such maneuvers), but am happy to share it with anyone who would like it. it is in four attachments, so it will take up a bit of space in your email inbox~just so you know.

i've just arrived to the big island a few days ago, and am creating my newest reality here on the big island...

i'm seeking a home where we eat what the land provides and live as close to her as possible...leaving a little bitty footprint is most welcome...

i'm seeking an exchange...perhaps it's gardening, farming, homeschooling or tutoring, cooking, housekeeping or caretaking, perhaps it's a combination, or perhaps it's something else...

i'm seeking a reality in which my basic needs are met so that i can reach out in other ways to the community~in teaching and learning, earning and giving, sharing and discovering...

E Komo Mai Full Moon Mini-Gathering, Friday Nov 23

I would like to welcome home rainbow family to an extremely low-key musical full moon mini-gathering starting early afternoon, Friday Nov 23, and going on well into the night if not all night.

The possible sites are Champagne Ponds (my top choice for pure shanti bliss, assuming we can get a rain canopy), Warm Ponds (very popular, has rain shelters, has a possibly established full moon gathering scene), or Pohoiki (untested by me since the development).

Any opinions on site choice, now is the time to let us know.

E Komo Mai (Welcome) to all rainbow family newly arrived to the island! My apologies if I have not been able to personally contact each of you... but I will try to make it to the sunday drum circle at kehena beach. I will come with my wife, two little girls and usually play didge. Ask around.

The total lunar eclipse will peak 5:26pm HST off the coast of French Guiana.
In Hawai'i, the moon will rise partially eclipsed. Let us celebrate the global energy with a mini-gathering, dedicated to good company, good food, and good song, and council about the future of Rainbow Gatherings in Hawai'i.

This full moon is Holi in India and the Lantern Festival in China. Time to get colorful!

Coming to the Big Island!

Me and my family are coming to Hawaii!

We are Zee and Matt, a couple with 2 small children (4 months and almost 4 years). I sew clothing and other goods and accessories, crochet, sing, play guitar, and spin poi. Matt is a carpenter with many years of experience. We play music, sing our own songs, dance, drum, and enjoy spending time in nature. We are a loving family and provide care and stability for each other. We are "green", we eat organic as much as we can and try limit our impact on Mother Earth.

We are looking for a place to stay on the Big Island somewhere in Puna would be ideal. We are willing to pay rent for a small hale or trade housing for work. I can help other mama's out baby sitting as well. We're open to temporary housing or something more long term. We have a dog and a cat and if possible, we would like to bring them out too.

Sending out positive energy... I know something great is going to happen.

Then, loved ones can check on the status of their family and friends. Register and connect at 1-800-RED CROSS or www.redcross.org.

Orange County Rescue Mission is accepting all non-perishable donations and gift certificates to restaurants Monday through Friday between the hours of 8am and 6pm Map to Orange County Rescue Mission. They are also asking groups to organize canned food drives, for more information please visit www.operationoc.org

If you would like to help please do not attempt to go to the affected areas. Trained first responders are in place and assisting where needed. Intentions may be for the best but going to evacuated or hazardous areas only slows efforts and creates distractions.

A new group for Eco Sustainable Alternative Tech. Mud Junkies

Well, I have pulled myself out of the Hawaiian rain forest once again. With months of computer time ahead of me as I write my second book, I decided to finally start a gr
oup focused on the Eco-Ark Project. Its multiple purposes include raising awareness of the Eco-ark being built in the Puna Rain Forest, encouraging others to start similar projects in their own area, sharing ideas and methodologies for accomplishing these goals, spreading ideas concerning sustainable, Eco-friendly technologies and off grid community living. Spreading knowledge of organic permaculture techniques, to encourage the building of community gardens and the growing of food in publicly accessible places (Green Ribbon Project). And helping each other to restoring this planet to its divinely intended Edenic state before it is too late.

This group will also act as a central meeting place for individuals wishing to join in the continued building of the ark on Hawaii Island next summer.

Moving to Hawaii

We are planning to move to Hawaii in December and right now we're still open as to what island we'll be living on. It'll either be Kauai or the Big Island. I'm hoping someone can point me in some directions...I'm basically putting it out there expecting to receive all positive things.

This will be an awareness raising and community sharing event, dealing with the very real invasions of homes and families in Puna, due to a plant the earth grows naturally.
